Movie Info

The newest nerd in school joins forces with the one-time Olympic hopeful whose failure at the Seoul Games made all of America cringe in this Nichelodeon Original Movie. Try as he might, there's just no disguising the fact that Hamm Lake Middle School's newest arrival won't be scoring any winning touchdowns in the near future; not only is Roland (Nathan Kress) hopelessly inept when it comes to sports, but he can usually be found somewhere in a corner with his nose buried in a book. Enter beloved Hamm Lake Middle School gym teacher Dave Stewie (Christopher Meloni). Dave represented his country at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, though his disastrous vault went on to become one of the greatest bloopers in sports history. Now, the National Gym Class Fitness Competition is fast closing in, and Dave is catching heat from the principal (Amy Sedaris) to whip the students into shape. Could Roland be just the kind of underdog Dave needs to lead his school to victory at the National Gym Class Fitness Competition? As Roland and Dave get busy training, a devious gym teacher (David Alan Grier) at a rival school plots subterfuge from afar.

...generally remains a cut above its adolescent-oriented brethren thanks primarily to star Christopher Meloni's unapologetically goofy, flat-out hilarious performance.

Audience Reviews for Gym Teacher: The Movie

It's corny & unoriginal for the most part, but Christopher Meloni's charming, & funny performance in this movie made it all worth my time. Now, the movie has the typical weak geek gets picked on & never give up cliche, but the story is so ridiculously done that it was worth while. It was nice to see Meloni go back to his original comedic roots & play a different comical character. I've always seen him as "Detective Elliot Stabler" from Law & Order SVU (Special Victims Unit), but I've read that he used to do comedic roles in other TV series, & in a handful of movies. So it was great seeing him be funny for the first time. The movie isn't a piece of genius, but it isn't a terrible movie either. Just don't take it too seriously & you'll have some laughs.

Christopher Meloni was acting a lot like Paul Ben-Victor in parts. It was cheesey but it was also hilarious to see Christopher Meloni acting like a spaz attack! Not to mention the amount of people who are in this one even if it's just for a short cameo.

In the first ten minutes of this movie, I was taken aback by Christopher Meloni's character of career gym teacher Dave Stewie. I was expecting him to be an arrogant jerk, like every real-life gym teacher, but instead his character is a loner who missed his shot at Olympic glory, and has never lived it down. Not only that, but his character in this movie is super over-the-top at the beginning, and it's a lot to take in. I was thinking Meloni had been studying a ton of Ace Ventura footage before doing this film; he's just so silly here. But then the jokes start to click. One after another, you are surprised by their cleverness. The funniest gag by far is that Meloni is a protein drink enthusiast, and this joke is used multiple times in hilarious fashion. At one point, a teacher he has a crush on invites him to dinner by informing him that she "got a new blender, and I know how you like your food - mulched...". It's lines like that that make what could be just a silly kid's movie into a genuine comedy. Christopher Meloni is downright hilarious in this role, I quite enjoyed his wacky antics.
