A great animated version of "The Little Mermaid". They showed it each year on television, until it was wiped from the world's consciousness by the loud Disney release. The style of artwork was dreamy, and also used in the "The Happy Prince", another Hallmark classic.

Just like The Lion King was "inspired" by Kimba....Disney used A LOT of this movie in their version of The Little Mermaid. It's totally obvious. I watched this film as a child in its original Japanese and I still prefer it to Disney's. For being 30 years old, the animation is simple, yet commanding. While there's no catchy tunes, the music is airy and emotionally spot-on. With blood and bare breasts, it's not sugarcoated in the slightest. The ending is more faithful to Andersen's vision, so it's incredibly tragic. It always brings tears to my eyes!
