It's an unwieldy, uncertain monster of a movie, so lacking the first's amiable nimbleness and cheek. Bigger means hollower in this inessential sequel, yet it's still entirely watchable at the worst of times due to Rothe's effervescent presence.

In Happy Death 2U all of the spontaneity of the first movie is lost and all we have left is a dumb argument, a poor script and a forgettable film. [Full review in Spanish]

Just like a déjà-vu, this sequel lacks some of the freshness that made its predecessor a modest hit. Jessica Rothe is absolutely charming in this sci-fi horror comedy blend. [Full Review in Spanish]

Those seeking horror will be frustrated with its wacky, nerdy slant, ensuring this film will irritate both those in search of scares and those bookish enough to appreciate a smarter sci-fi thriller.

It's hard not to find Happy Death Day 2U a little exhausting and empty.

This is a clear example of why we don't need sequels. Go ahead and just let the first one be great. Don't bring us trash for the sequel...why are we still doing these?

Rothe shines in this film as she did in the original, and so does most of the supporting cast, but her charms aren't enough to make Happy Death Day 2U a multiverse you'd be happy to be stuck duplicating.
February 24, 2019
Happy Death Day 2U is a messy film that repeats itself over and over again without actually going anywhere.
February 20, 2019
Rothe is the attraction of this high-concept, ludicrous sequel that trades charm for convolution.

Happy Death Day 2U is like watching a million ideas hit the screen at the same time, progressively moving itself to shakier ground before losing any sense of tonal comprehension or narrative necessity.

This is one time when (with apologies to Herman's Hermits and that jolly Henry VIII) the second verse -- multi or otherwise -- is not the same as the first.

While there are some funny sequences, the horror really struggles to live up. Worst of all, this movie drags, despite the movie only lasting an hour and forty minutes.
February 18, 2019
The first movie qualified as a slasher flick; this one is more of a sci-fi caper with occasional stab wounds.
February 16, 2019
Ambitious as it is Happy Death Day 2U becomes convoluted real quick. The more it tries to explain its wacky premise, the harder it becomes to root for.
February 16, 2019
There's no horror OR comedy, just a weird science based riff on a slightly better movie. Blow out the candles now, it's time to wish 'Happy Death Day' to these movies.
February 16, 2019
I admire the film's riskiness, and it's not like other horror movies out...but whenever the film tries to be scary, it's the most mainstream, familiar scenes you've seen a thousand times.
February 15, 2019
Happy Death Day 2U finally collapses under the weight of its own ambitions, as well as some unfortunate forays into slapstick.
February 15, 2019
Happy Death Day 2U wants to be the breath of fresh air the original was. Unfortunately, it probably only ever had the potential to be a handsome bit of déjà vu.

As a horror film, it only offers a few tidbits and as a parody it is very infantile. [Full Review in Spanish]

Rothe mugs and emotes for all she's worth, which is something, but her effort only highlights the desultory character of everything around her.
