Gross and disgusting. Not good for anyone's mental health, watching this genre of movie.
It's good, entertaining, i'd recommend it.
Dark, funny, gory - all the things I love. Worth a watch.
Harpoon may be razor thin on plot and rely on just 3 characters to hold your attention for the entire film, but whatever doubts you may have going into this film regarding these potential issues are immediately squashed within the first minute. By using a notable character actor (that I won't spoil here) to serve as a narrator or a "Greek Chorus of one" in between each act of the film, the direction is given the freedom to creatively explore the chaos that is constantly unfolding, (and usually in ways far worse than you could've imagined). What results is both a Horror film mixed with the blackest of comedic hearts. This isn't just some Gallows humor peppered into a tense thriller — HARPOON is diabolically evil when it's least expected, and it's hard to find a 5-7 minute stretch of the movie without at least one extremely twisted, (yet hilarious), moment.
HARPOON just may sneak its way into my top 10 best Horror films of 2019 list by the year's end, and I won't be surprised if it's in my top 5. The fact that it has a "first film" sort of feel to it is much of the charm. But it never asks you to give it some slack with the narrative logic: if it establishes rules for this fictional setting/world, you can damn well expect the characters to violently test the reality they've found themselves, and perhaps the funniest jokes are predicated on their various efforts to employ half-baked lifehacks when things get extremely dire.
Grounded in all of the bleakness is an ever-present feeling of relatability. At no point in the film do you think all three characters are impossible to sympathize with, because at least one is always honoring the humanity among the crisis. But this temperament is by no means stationary, and is constantly being handed off like a hot potato so that two of the three leads can chase some desperate and/or self-serving impulse with extremely comedic outcomes every time.
I am a prey to the predatorily suspense of this movie.
Implausible but very entertaining horror comedy thriller.
Awesome film from Rob Grant. A great director and writer and one to follow. If you love movies set on the water with dark humor and characters you'll hate, then you will love this. Clever and squirmy in all the right places. See the full review on vanessasnonspoilers.com
