Sentimental road movie exploring aged people problems. The film has a soul and Art Carney created authentic character teamed up with his fellow cat Tonto. The controversial Oscar decision is quite memorable though.

Long before "About Schmidt " and "Straight Story " came this heartwarming tale of an old man who loses everything but his cat Tonto. Together they travel across the nation, stopping at certain areas to. visit his estranged children. If the plot seems too familiar its because the titles above and many others have copied its premise.

It's a sweet road trip movie that gets a bad wrap due to Carney's Oscar win over Al Pacino in Godfather 2 and Dustin Hoffman in Lenny but deserves a better legacy. Though I think Hoffman should have won that year, Carney gives a touching and sweet performance.

This is a gentle, feeling but not sentimental account of an old man searching for a new life after the rich old ones ended in NYC. This is not a "bucket-list", nor a nostalgic remembrance of the past. Harry moves on with time and situation, accepting and offering good wills, sunsetting with the road from east to the diffused glories of the west coast.

Hard not to love, "Harry and Tonto" is a genuinely heartfelt story of an old man (& his cat) searching for a place to truly call home.

I really enjoyed harry and tonto a very fun film where art carney plays a retiree whose apartment building has just been demolished and decides to travel to los angeles with his pet cat tonto and visit his son played by larry hagman. Its like a 1970s version of planes, trains and automobiles but has a way better cast and storyline I can see why art carney won best actor Oscar

Nice "hangout" movie with an interesting character and actor. Very affable, low-key slice-of-life movie the like of which isn't made anymore. Carney shouldn't have won the Oscar for Best Actor, but still a very good performance.

This was a pretty decent road movie. Art Carney is wonderful as the elderly titular character: Harry. He goes cross country with his cat Tonto on an adventure seeking happiness, enlightenment and meeting many eccentric characters along the way. That being said, I must point out that Al Pacino ' s performance in the Godfather part 2 was more deserving of the best actor oscar in 74.

I despise every character in this film, except the black family. Harry is so self-centered, at the expense of everyone else's convenience, it's maddening. It would have been sweeter if all of the characters weren't so contemptible. Only worth seeing for Carney's performance.

It's not easy to make comedies that work as drama, too. But Carney's acting is so perceptive that it helps this material succeed.

Even though Art Carney may not have deserved Best Actor over Al Pacino, he's still showing some rather fine work in this film.

the only reason i saw this film was because wanted to see the performance that beat out pacino , nicholson , and hoffman for the godfather partt 2 , chinatown , and lenny ! it's actually not bad at all , it is debatable if carney was better than these men , but he was ofcourse very good !

Not what I was expecting. Alternately philosophical, stupid, annoying, funny, yet often perceptive and, at times, very poignant. Carney, and Tonto, were great throughout.

Simplistic but thoughtful, "Harry and Tonto" is made by Art Carney's performance. A sweet, little gem of a movie.

An introspective, cross-country road trip with a wonderful performance by Carney--Endearing!!

The pinnacle of Art Carney's later career. We have the story of man forced onto the street with only a beloved cat as companion. Naturally the humanity of the character is brought forth with the change in his circumstances and Carney's interactions with those he meets are memorable.

Many people are furious about Al Pacino losing his Oscar for The Godfather: Part II, but after you watch Harry and Tonto, you certainly will feel Art Carney is definitely deserved the statue for his flawless performance. 11 Years later, Geraldine Page won her overdue Oscar for a character same alike in The Trip to Bountiful, due to the same reasons of course: nostalgia, a sense of insistence and refusal to compliance. Harry's trip is also a snapshot of the contemporary US, including themes on the breakdown of human relationship and the rebellious youth. Besides, how can you not like the adorable Tonto?

"Dear Advertisers, I am disgusted with the way old people are depicted on television. We are not all vibrant, fun loving sex maniacs. Many of us are bitter, resentful individuals who remember the good old days when entertainment was bland and inoffensive." -Abe Simpson.

The only problem with this movie is that there isn't a single scene that you may remember. But at the same time, you will like it more than you ever thought you could've. Oh, and that Art Carney guy does a great job acting in a real performance.

Like too many of Mazursky's films, Harry & Tonto is update of better films, in this case of De Sica's Umberto D, in this case, an old man with cat who has lost his place to live. Not a bad film, but one tied too closely to it's time. Mazursky's gifts as a writer and director are the ability to finely limn the au courant relationships of his time and place, but he misses creating art because sentimentality wins out all too often.
