If you're unfamiliar with Hawking's theories on black holes and the Big Bang, this doc won't enlighten you. There's only a basic summary of his work before it's deemed too complex for anyone but cosmologists to grasp.

Finnigan wisely seizes on the gentle strength and charisma of Hawking's first wife, Jane Wilde. She imprints on the film as fully as her former husband, whose presence is still considerable.

The movie has the typical mix of interviews and archival pictures, serving mostly linear storytelling, with hardly a frame of surprising or pretty filmmaking. Maybe creativity can take a rest when you're letting an oddly charismatic genius have his say.
