This soapy saga is for adults only.

There's a whole lot of romantic and historical huffing and puffing in writer-director John Duigan's rickety epic, most all of it recycled from other films.
November 5, 2004
The story becomes a long slog because Duigan doesn't define his characters and because he's determined to touch too many of the familiar '30s European bases.

The passion barely simmers, let alone rages, which may vex some viewers and will certainly confound the tabloids.

Great, gooey, hot-fudge sundae of a love story.

There's plenty of eye candy -- gorgeous scenery, gorgeous costumes, gorgeous people -- to keep the viewer from minding (too much) the Olympic leaps of faith required to invest in the film's plot.

A snooze, despite all the sex and other gunplay.

Duigan has the makings of a good yarn, but instead of trusting the story and his characters, he becomes fatally bogged down in trying to make statements.

You might not think it would be easy to make a dull film about love, war and a bisexual threesome, but Head in the Clouds manages this task efficiently despite a couple of decent performances from Charlize Theron and Stuart Townsend.

Unfortunately, the movie's unwieldy, episodic structure undercuts Theron's impressive performance.

The love story rates a B, while the drama is a C at best. Granted, the adventure part perks up to an A-minus, but you have to wade through two-thirds of the movie to get there.

It sometimes appears to have been designed deliberately as an encyclopedia of clichs.

An ambitious, if uneven, tale of passionate lovers from 1933 to 1945.

This wartime epic is so full of silly scenes and clichd dialogue that its attempts to look classy could be likened to seeking a place for a whoopie cushion in the heart of the Louvre.

Duigan gets the costumes right and the emotion wrong.

It wants to be a hard-panting melodrama, with spies and sex and love and death, and there are times when a movie like this is exactly what you feel like indulging.

Head in the Clouds may be beautiful, but it has little soul.
