Janga's spare, evocative study of a hoodlum unexpectedly in touch with the natural world offers numerous rewards.
Anders Walter gives Helium a lightness that counters the emotionally-laden subject matter, even during fantasy sequences that promise airiness and mobility for the bedridden boy.
This was my favorite of the Oscar nominated live-action shorts, and it ended up winning. A terminally ill little boy name Alfred (Pelle Falk Krusbæk) admits he doesn't really believe in the heaven that his family tells him about. The hospital's new janitor, Enzo (Casper Crump), forms a connection with the boy. The man has overlooked skills as a storyteller and spins the tale of a different fantasy land called Helium where Alfred will go when he dies. There are several dream sequences with imaginative effects as Alfred is given joy and hope in his final days. Thanks to a kind-hearted nurse Enzo is able to finish his description of Helium. A touching alternative to accepted religious views of an afterlife from Denmark.
