Gritty and realistic for its time, good storyline and good acting. Still enjoyable about 65 years on!
Quite a wild ride! ??
A frist class production with Sean Connery to boot. Great cast, direction, filming, and the story is a great time capsule of this type of work. Some of the plot was had gaps, but it still came together well.
Dated and rather pedestrian drama in which a stolid Stanley Baker joins a road haulage business and finds himself at immediate odds with Red, a fag-clenching Irishman (played by a wildly hammy Patrick McGoohan). Hilarious undercranked sequences of lorries racing around Buckinghamshire are leavened by good supporting performances from George Murcell, Sean Connery, Sid James, William Hartnell, and an excellent one by Herbert Lom as Baker's roommate and love rival.
classic British film. excellent drama around the lives of a wild group of lorry drivers!
An impressive British cast stars in this fast-moving adventure-drama.
Sullen Stanley Baker arrives at the gate of a trucking company looking for work. He's willing to take the job, despite the clear pressure to break road rules to deliver as many loads as possible each day. Rough tough and possibly insane Patrick McGoohan is the pacesetter (18 loads per day) and foreman who won't stand any competition - and will sabotage another driver to keep his status. Herbert Lom is gentle "Gino" the Italian immigrant who befriends Baker and Peggy Cummins is their love interest. Cy Endfield directs with panache and this is a truly taut tense tough and gripping affair. Who knew delivering rocks could be this exciting? (Maybe Clouzot did - but he had nitroglycerine as the load in The Wages of Fear). Great cast of British character actors and stars-to-be (including young S. Connery).
Stanley Baker is an ex-con trying to go straight, but quickly learns that his trucking company boss is up to no good. It's a solid British thriller that touts a terrific supporting cast including Peggy Cummins and many soon to be famous actors, including Sean Connery (James Bond), Herbert Lom (The Pink Panther), Patrick McGoohan (Danger Man and The Prisoner), Jill Ireland (Mrs. Charles Bronson), David McCallum (The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ), William Hartnell (the first Doctor) and Sid James (the "Carry On" films).
A young and very handsome Sean Connery, Stanley Baker. Sid James. Patrick MCGoohan & Gordon Jackson also looking relatively young make this cast a kind of who's who of British great stars if the future. It used to be said the Americans do the best car chases, but when it comes to truck chases, few films better this one. I wonder if the Mad Max 2 creators saw this film in their youths
Brilliant piece of British 50s social realism--Trucking Hell!!
