When Jamie Miller and her wife, Alex Kanai, try to save their failing marriage by going on a canoe trip in rural Missouri, they find themselves stranded after an accident. Alex breaks her leg during a canoe flip and they must slowly make their way to the nearest small town for help. Upon arriving they find it has been overrun by virus-infected "Heps" and extreme right wing local militias who are battling them. The leader of one of the groups, "Big John Gruber", shuttles them to safety at his bunker where they are welcomed by a seemingly friendly group of locals, but after witnessing personal and gruesome horrors, the women know they must escape. Jamie and Alex now find themselves on the run, caught between the group that saved them, a competing militia, and the growing infected Hep threat.

Herd subverts standard zombie tropes while grounding the narrative in a touching queer romance. That it all mostly works is thanks to two solid turns from Ellen Adair and Mitzi Akaha.

Herd opens with a tense, promising scene that suggests a sharp, suspenseful horror film, but the movie never follows through on that potential. After the intriguing setup, the story immediately flattens into a one-note experience with no tonal evolution, creativity, or emotional pull. What starts with energy quickly becomes monotonous, offering no tension or sense of direction. The film feels one-dimensional, as though the director never fully understood or explored what the writer intended. Instead of building atmosphere or depth, the movie repeats the same beats without expansion. You can sense a stronger story beneath the surface, but the execution never allows it to come alive. With clearer vision, tighter collaboration, and more dynamic storytelling, Herd could have been something memorable. As it stands, it’s a missed opportunity that fails to deliver on the promise of its opening scene.

The main character is useless. Zero redeeming qualities. Zero decision making. Zero leadership skills. Within 5 minutes if the movie starting in already rooting for the zombies to murder everyone. I suggest you save your time and watch something else!

"tHiS mOViE iS abSoOLuTeLY tARrIBLe!!!..." All of the people whining about this are the exact types of humans you'd describe as a "herd animal." And none of them - for all of their talk about how stupid horror movie protagonists are - would last a day during a swine flu epidemic if they had only their "survival skills" to rely on.
