Very dumb and occasionally very funny.

It is indescribably bad.

The reteaming of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in "Holmes & Watson" as that celebrated detective duo Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson ignites few chuckles and absolutely no comedic fireworks.

For my money, this is a laugh-out-loud movie ideal for a relaxing Friday night.

The smell of flop-sweat permeates the movie like real sweat in a locker room. It's too bad to be offensive, too inert to be annoying.

Holmes & Watson is likely to make even the least demanding cinema-goers feel as if they've had their intelligence insulted.

These jokes are of course tired junk, aiming for the lowest of the low-hanging fruit and still somehow not always hitting their targets.

An astoundingly awful film.

Holmes & Watson is head-scratchingly unfunny. Filled to busting with talent and potential that, say in the hands of Aardman animation, might flourish as well as it should, but here it all falls disappointingly flat.

Puerile, imbecilic and imbued with the kind of casual 1970s sitcom homophobia that reads all male friendships as somehow suspect, this slack-jawed grossout comedy represents the nadir of Conan Doyle adaptations.

Why shell out ticket money for a movie that was deemed too terrible for a home streaming platform that greenlit The Ridiculous Six?
January 4, 2019
Inspector Lestrade (Rob Brydon, who deserves better) is fully aware, and mostly stands around looking as exasperated as the audience.

It is two people in a bar, three or four beers in, just telling jokes to each other that are not even funny.
January 3, 2019
But even beyond wasting the talents of Ferrell and Reilly, writer-director Ethan Coen piles on one stupid anachronistic joke after another throughout the movie and then doesn't even bother to take them to their logical climaxes.

Smart about how it's stupid, the comedy suggests an embrace of remorseless logic will only rot your soul and friendships. Yeah, it's a movie in which John C. Reilly lactates, but it also says more than you'd expect about the milk of human kindness.

My Christmas night was ruined you know what I mean, but it's just that they dropped the ball. This is possibly the worst movie of the year.

How could a movie with Ferrell and Reilly not work? These are two incredible actors, but these roles just don't suit them, try as they might. Their over-the-top antics never gel, appearing as if even they know it's not working.

Holmes & Watson is a lazy comedy that wastes a fun premise and talented cast on tired jokes, tasteless gags, and sometimes bafflingly outdated humor.

The comic intentions are obvious but barely warrant a smile.
December 31, 2018
The real crime in Holmes & Watson is the waste of the supporting cast.
