The only mystery here is how anyone let this atrocity out into the wild in the first place.

So defiantly humorless that it seems to punish any small amount of laughs by doubling down on every joke, reducing them to childishly annoying at best.

This is an old-fashioned mess with flashes of potential: Rebecca Hall's "lady doctor", as hubristic a medic as any of her male colleagues, is clever. And in a film that is mostly an embarrassment, its supporting cast is mostly an embarrassment of riches.

Holmes and Watson occasionally showcases the wholesome bromance that Ferrell and Reilly have created over their career - but in this instance, the duo can't crack the code of the film's own self indulgence and clueless execution.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly fail to muster the chemistry from their previous efforts in Etan Cohen's witless take on the legendary detective.

The equivalent of seeing best buds reunite at a high school reunion and after a while you realize they're better off without each other as their dynamic peaked in high school.

My Christmas night was ruined you know what I mean, but it's just that they dropped the ball. This is possibly the worst movie of the year.

It is two people in a bar, three or four beers in, just telling jokes to each other that are not even funny.

How could a movie with Ferrell and Reilly not work? These are two incredible actors, but these roles just don't suit them, try as they might. Their over-the-top antics never gel, appearing as if even they know it's not working.

Holmes & Watson is likely to make even the least demanding cinema-goers feel as if they've had their intelligence insulted.

Holmes and Watson is a brutal cinematic disgrace and a stain to the legacy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's literary detective, Sherlock Holmes.

It's just frustrating that Holmes and Watson has a handful of moments of genuine comic lunacy - a seconds-long Elephant Man cameo is inspired - but all they really do is highlight the laziness and lack of laughs in the rest of the film.

Sony knew what would happen when this hit theaters. No word of mouth campaign, whether organic or engineered, was ever going to pop up to influence audiences for this lackluster comedy.

Holmes & Watson fails precisely because its filmmaker has no desire to take control of the material.

If you choose to watch this movie, you'll be treated to an hour and a half of different versions of the same gag: what if [insert modern thing] somehow existed in Victorian times!?

It's not one of the worst films of the year overall, thanks to the cast and some decent production design, but it's absolutely one of the worst directed and edited films of the year.

Holmes and Watson will probably make you smile, and occasionally, it earns that goodwill. But the film is nowhere near where it should be with the company present.

Holmes & Watson is the kind of sloppy production that's almost easier to pity than hate.

Holmes & Watson is head-scratchingly unfunny. Filled to busting with talent and potential that, say in the hands of Aardman animation, might flourish as well as it should, but here it all falls disappointingly flat.

The cinematic reunion of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, a decade removed from Step Brothers, should be triumphant and hilarious, as opposed to a desperate, sweaty mess.
