Horatio Hornblower: Duty Reviews

  • Dec 13, 2014

A great series, based on the books by CS Forester. The adventures of Horatio Hornblower, an officer in the Royal Navy at the start of the 19th century. The movies follow his rise up the ranks. Very realistic in its actions, commands, uniforms, ships etc. Some great action and human drama. Special effects are good, except for the explosions. Those seem very cheap and unrealistic. The other area that seems unrealistic is Hornblower's home life. The relationship with Maria seems very clumsy and unnatural. Great performance by Ioan Gruffudd in the lead role. This is surpassed by Robert Lindsay as Admiral Pellew. He provides the perfect mix of authority, gravitas, compassion and father-like doting. Good support from Paul McGann as Lt Bush, Paul Copley as Matthews and Sean Gilder as Styles. The biggest pity is that this movie is the last one they made, when there are several books left.

Hornblower might be a great officer but he has much to learn as a husband. Another great adventure of daring do although perhaps it would be wise for the captain not to risk his person leading crazy missions into France! A shame that this is the last one.

the final film in the "hornblower" series, and it doesn't disappoint. gruffudd again delivers a great performance, as does robert lindsay and paul mcgann. i really enjoyed the final battle in the snow, plus the strategy the horation employs. very interesting and i don't think any other series could do this story better.

All of the A&E Hornblower adaptations are excellent. They aren't 100% identical to the books, but they capture the spirit quite well, and the production quality is high. The actors are also brilliant, and portray favorite characters quite well. In this episode-- Bush is just awesome. Like usual.

A fitting conclusion to the series, although it never really seems like Hornblower loves his wife. It seems like he married her in order to make her stop crying. However, the action and plot are engaging as always.
