Critics Consensus

House is a gleefully demented collage of grand guginol guffaws and bizarre sequences.

House seems born out of restlessness and contempt for the status quo; it’s one of those movies that doubles as a piece of film criticism, intent on exposing and exploding all the tiresome clichés that commercial cinema constantly recycles. Go to Full Review

Too absurd to be genuinely terrifying, yet too nightmarish to be merely comic, "House" seems like it was beamed to Earth from another planet. Go to Full Review

A silly, surreal cross of Japanese horror, anime and just plain weirdness, this 1977 fever dream of styles makes you wonder: How did this ever get made? Go to Full Review

House's biggest strength and weakness is that it is utterly disorienting which can be very engaging for the viewer but can also keep you from being grounded in the film. Go to Full Review

Christian K @ckacar 16 hrs ago I am certain that this is parodying some genre from 70s Japan but since I don't know what I have to say this is one of the most unique and interesting things I've ever seen. See more Alex B @AlexBioni 1 day ago Toilet Paper, Please What in the world did I just witness? This film is so colorful, almost like a Bob Ross painting. The vibrant colors and creative cuts make it feel like a fantasy dream. I love how the bright summer vibe shifts to grays and blues at the house. I wondered if this was worth watching. It felt goofy until the water well scene happened, and my mouth dropped. For a 1977 film, that effect looks incredible. The flames and colors on the piano keys are awesome, too. This movie is basically a painting filled with technical artistry. It has everything: scary imagery, family tragedy, coming of age, and karate moves! The filmmaking is brilliant, especially in the last 20 minutes. That piano scene is insane. I cared about Gorgeous right away, and her story kept me invested. The sadness, fear, and confusion capture grief. I wanted more scary imagery, but I don't know how often I'll revisit this one. I can't deny it's technically fantastic. What a bizarre experience! See more R J @Lord_Bitter 3 days ago Crazy, campy romp that is a must-view for B-movie fans. Tantalizing nude scenes that probably helped make this popular in Japan. Shout out to the piano for extreme predation. I'll also never look at white Persian cats the same way again. Chef's kiss with the unrealistic special fx. This should be what all young filmmakers aspire to. See more Teddy B @RT90521672 4 days ago A kinetic funhouse ride doubling as a solemn, coming-of-age fairy tale, 'Hausu' pulls out all the stops and never gives the audience up under its intoxicating influence. Slick, idyllic, beautiful, gleeful and demented; it's the only time I can think of where a child writer actually elevates the quality of a film. A true standout for me has to be the wonderful soundtrack, or the inventiveness of the special effects, or the gorgeous camera tricks---I could go on and on. See more Regan M @RT02079930 Oct 4, 2026 Visually stunning, and directed to mirror the fact that the directors 6 year old daughter wrote it. A lot of fun, very funny, and definitely creepy. Fantastic. See more B P @Bradster69 Aug 31, 2026 Definitely Recommend It See more Read all reviews
