the title character here is a widow with 5 unwed daughters who uses God and fear to rule and dominate her household. interesting exanimation of spanish society where woman are supposted 2b admired and placed on a pedastal.

I appreciate it for the reality that it brings, but having read the original, I found it very prolonged at some points. Not an exception to most movies that fail to be better than the original text. That being said, the role of Maria Josefa is amazingly played, and the story is very powerful. The acting is great, but the directing mostly fails.
