Great Movie with a wonderfully crafted plot!
When a detective arrives on an isolated island to investigate a murder he finds more than he's looking for in this violent mystery.
By the film's end, the protagonist feels sick to his stomach from the sight of blood and chaos. I felt the same way, as Blood Rain's overly gory tone and nature left a little to be desired. It is a luscious looking murder mystery thriller, but other than the costumes and set design, this movie doesn't stick out from the pack in the murder mystery or period piece genre.
A very interesting movie, showing the clash between tradition and technology, faith/superstition and rational reasoning -- but the story line falls to pieces for the conclusion. And there are some really gory scenes.
Pretty enjoyable Korean crime thriller in historical setting. Maybe pace limps at times in the middle, but in the finale movie succeeds to build drama. I'd recommend it to anyone who isn't allergic to Asian movies.
Too many characters (their names didn't come easy on me) left me confused a bit too often in this foreign language flick. While I was easily able to identify the protagonist, it wasn't quite the same with some other major characters. Although I was able to get the gist of the plot as the movie ended, it was difficult to remain involved with the mystery. May have enjoyed it more had I been not at loss.
Period murder mystery set in 19th century Korea. The story which takes place on a small island just off mainland Korea is about a detective who's been summoned to investigate an arson attack on a merchant ship but soon gets embroiled in a murder hunt after a series of grisly killings start to occur which locals start to believe are being comitted by the vengeful ghost of an executed catholic man who use to run the paper mill. I thought this was a pretty classy filmfor the most part with some graphic and bloody death scenes and a decent story at its core. Unfortunately the film was a little over-stretched and at times confusingly told. It would also have been nice if the supernatural angle was played out a bit more adding a spookier atmosphere. But despite these grievances the movie is a solid effort - like a mix of "Sleepy Hollow" and "The Name of the Rose".
Decent period crime mystery thriller set in an island. Not enough creepiness imo. One can get quite lost with names/characters thrown into the murder mystery, so pay extra attention.
Great Korean murder mystery & costume drama. As a string of gruesome murders unfold on a very isolated and superstitious island, detectives from the mainland are called it to investigate. The main character, a stubborn detective, refuses the supernatural explanations for the crimes, and challenges the very rigid social etiquette of Joseon Korea to find the uncomfortable truth. Reminiscent of 'the Name of the Rose' with a touch of Judge Dee thrown in.
