Movie Info

Animator Don Hertzfeldt returns to the saga of Bill, the profoundly unlucky stick figure from his earlier films, in this darkly comic short subject. Bill tends to be deeply paranoid and pessimistic, and while we saw how this impacted his life in Everything Will Be OK, I Am So Proud of You offers a look into his life and why he's so unhappy. Bill's family has a strange habit of attracting trains, causing many of his relations to be short on extremities, and his brother's metal limbs weren't much of a help when he fell in the ocean, causing him to drown. After his brother's death, Bill's mother becomes fanatically overprotective of him, suffocating him with misplaced affection that only grows worse when he becomes an adult, making it impossible for her to relate to other men when she becomes a widow. I Am So Proud of You was a prizewinner at 12 major film festivals, including the Boston Independent Film Festival, the Hamptons International Film Festival, and the Memphis Indie Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Audience Reviews for I Am So Proud of You

Don Hertzfeldt's second installment in his trilogy of films about Bill is just as excellent, funny, dark, witty, sad, and bizarre as his first installment, "Everything Will Be OK". The man just has a great inventive and creative mind, that can draw these great simple images, and merge them with deep thought and philosophy, all without losing his sense of humor entirely. I'm completely thrilled by the work he puts out.

Hertzfeldt work has changed significantly over the last few years, his humor still remains as one of the most distinct voices in animation but his storytelling and message have improved greatly. The latest in his trilogy "I Am So Proud Of You" is heartfelt at points and very original in its construction. The explanation of the title is one of his finest moments.

I like most of Hertzfeldt's work, and this is no disappointment. It maintains his odd humor throughout, while also achieving a somewhat touching yet ominous and wistful tone. I'd probably subtract a star if it hadn't included the prelude to Wagner's "Das Rheingold."
