'I Am Mother' so easily could have breathed the same air of intrigue as Duncan Jones' 'Moon' and Alex Garland's 'Ex Machina.' Its story buildup isn't so far off planet in that regard. In the end, however, it doesn't amount to anything special.

The film just has too much other stuff going on to delve into what it'd be like growing up as the first and so far only member of Humanity 2.0. That's a failing, but an eminently forgivable one.
