I Hate Myself :) centers on two thoroughly repellant, self-absorbed figures with whom spending time proves a nearly intolerable trial.
Ugly to look at and even uglier to listen to, Joanna Arnow's whiny documentary "i hate myself :)" plays like an especially brutal exercise in self-analysis.
It's difficult to label Arnow's cinematic voice, and this particular film, or why anyone would even want to watch something so personal, but i hate myself :) is never not fascinating.
It's refreshing to see a filmmaker embrace this honesty with such gusto (which, like life, is often painful or awkward to experience).
Despite some memorably painful moments and underlying artistic urgency, the film's implications remain unprocessed and unquestioned.
Deceptively simple cinéma-vérité piece is hard to stomach but thought-provoking.
Few documentarians give themselves to their work as literally as Joanna Arnow.
