I really wasn't expecting much, and let's be honest, these movies will never be mistaken for a Pixar-type movie, but you know what? I had a surprisingly good time.

Gutt (Peter Dinklage) and Sid's granny (Wanda Sykes) are welcome additions to the cast, adding vitality and flavor to a cast whose conflicts have subsided in the previous chapters.

The dialogue is sometimes too sluggish and definitely too preachy, the ending is a little too sappy, yet somehow this strange collection of prehistoric critters and their completely illogical life are consistently likable, if not quite lovable.

They keep pumping out more "Ice Age" movies, as if it were some sort of "Rocky" for kids or something, and if they never reach the heights of the best animated fare, they chug along efficiently.

"Continental Drift," like its predecessors, is much too friendly to dislike, and its vision of interspecies multiculturalism is generous and appealing.

It's all sight gags and action beats, which tends to cover the shortcomings these assembly-line farces are infamous for.

The story and character development are rather perfunctory but there are some good lines and there's no faulting the animation, showcased in some spectacular action sequences.

Kids will enjoy themselves and adults won't feel the urge to spend the duration hiding out in the restrooms. Some of the jokes are funny.

Don't go expecting too much and you'll enjoy it well enough - and no doubt return for number five, when we'll probably be meeting aliens or cowboys.
