Audience Reviews for If I Were a Rich Man

Ah! Si j'étais riche (If I Were a Rich Man) was an interesting movie. I was lucky enough to catch the Boulder premiere of it (which isn't saying much, as the movie seems to be 2 years old). note: the movie linked is not the correct movie. i cannot find this movie on rottentomatoes. the imdb page can be found here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0315152/ Just a few things I want to say about this movie: Apparently, this movie won the prestigious camera d'or at cannes. This is something I cannot understand at all. Now, the cinematography wasn't bad, it was fairly good. But it wasn't interesting at all. No interesting shadows, no interesting camera movement, no interesting lighting setups at all. It was just...a good job at not being bad lighting. What I liked about this movie was that it just offered us all up a fantasy: what if, down on your luck in every aspect of your life, you won a $10,000,000 lottery? Of course, the twist is that the man that does just that has to keep it a secret from his wife...at least until the divorce is final. That twist on the story kept things fairly interesting. The movie was a comedy, and the comedy was hit-and-miss. Some of it was good, subtle humor. But some was just boring bathroom humor. SPOILER ALERT What disappointed me the most was the tacked-on "happy" ending. Okay, maybe tacked-on isn't the right expression. It did seem sort of realistic, as many of us have broken up with significant others only to get back together 6 months later. But usually this does not last either. In this movie, after all the anxiety shown between the two and how bland their marriage had gotten...money will fix everything. Money is the reason they got back together and in the end they are presumably happy. Perhaps it was subtly telling us that they won't be happy, but I didn't get the feeling that it was going that way. Getting re-married does not equal a fresh start. They are still the same exact people, only with money.
