Seidl has a distinctive and disturbing vision, but he is not inclined to explore the humanity of his characters, just their status as victim or abuser.

A political film in the widest sense of the term, the strongly acted and dispassionately photographed Import/Export holds up a troubling mirror to our times.

Though not as powerful or original as Dog Days, Import/Export, arguably the grimmest film in Cannes Fest this year, nerits attention for continuings to show Seidl's singular vision, here manifest in making East looks more like West and vice versa.

It's the very unremitting nature of the vision that forces us to confront an unpalatable truth and in that, many willing to go along may find a strange sort of comfort.

A tawdry little film ostensibly about the cultural clashes resulting from the proximity of former Soviet states, such as the Ukraine, to western nations such as Austria. There is a film to be made on the topic, but this isn't it.
