It's almost trivial, but personal touches make its take on familyhood persistence identifiable.

Very well written. All the supporting performances are good.

Although In Her Shoes aims to rub along, with that scuffed worldliness which Hanson has made his own, it keeps bumping into the archness of the romantic-domestic genre.

It's the performances -- three unerringly strong female ones -- that highlight this take on Jennifer Weiner's popular Philly-based chick-lit offering.

Date films don't come much more user-friendly than this.

Director Curtis Hanson shows the audience that he is not immune to schmaltz poured on extra thick.

In Her Shoes is formula of the quality sort. Formula that showcases big performances and metaphors, and mood-indicating rock songs.

Many films only pay lip service to the theme of familial conflict. This one really explores the way pain and love are often hopelessly intertwined in relationships.

(a) chick flick that respects men and the contribution they make to chicks' lives...there are as many tears as laughs in the highly nuanced script. I was mesmerized.

Schmaltzy? Sure, but it's darn good schmaltz.

Though at times Shoes looks as if it might wander off in the disparate directions of Terms of Endearment and Sex and the City, Hanson's skill with actors keeps the film's feet on the ground.

For the guys, this movie may be just as painful as going shoe shopping with a lady friend. Yet, it's refreshing to see Shirley MacLaine still has a bit of Irma la Douce left in her.

It's a rare film that requires a trash-talking best friend and a lively, smart-mouthed, comically blunt little old lady to liven things up. It's an even rarer film that can't be helped by either one.

It accomplishes its goal in a watchable style.
