Portland is a great setting, gritty and beutiful at the same time. the cinematography is gorgeous, the soundtrack is one of the best I have heard in a while. Everything flows really well. It was also refreshing. So many movies right now are built to stir up stressful emotions. After the screening, there was a Q&A with Josh Loeb, and I was very impressed. He has been a highly successful restaurateur for decades, but decided to pursue a dream he had held since film school: making a feature film of his own. He drew on his life experiences to create a script with appealing characters who are complex, neurotic, and flawed, with a depth not usually seen in romantic comedies. He directed, wrote, and produced the film, and the results are very impressive. I've been in the film business for a long time, and it's rare to see a first-time filmmaker create a movie that is so polished. I think he achieved this in part because he enjoys collaborating with the talented people around him. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does next. The characters are complicated and dealing with so much life outside of the central love story, and their challenges make them relatable.
