The problem with In the Mood for Love is that its imagery has far too many face-cards and not enough twos and fives and eights, which, boring as they are, nevertheless constitute the indispensable nitty-gritty of narrative.

I wish I could report that a feverish erotic tension builds, but it really doesn't.

I didn't much care for this very strange movie.

Scene after scene, Wong repeats images, situations, and dialogue, so hung up on representing paralysis that the situation fails to blossom.

Will put most people in the mood for slumber.

Just like most vertebrates in any world where gravity exists, however, a lack of a cinematic spine and skeletal structure usually results in a quivering mass that may look interesting, but clearly can't get anywhere on its own.

This is a strange film. It has some real positives, but they don't add up to a satisfying experience.

As a film it just seemed too slow, even plodding.

Despite its surface sheen the picture is really nothing more than a high-toned soap opera straining to pass for a work of art.

Cheung and Leung are suave and captivating, but their tedious game of subtle approach and retreat provides very little entertainment for the filmgoer.

In the Mood for Love is a lovely, almost handmade object that I find frustratingly coy, almost coquettish.

In the Mood for Love shows why devoted fans like his work. It also also shows why Wong isn't more popular with mainstream audiences.

Wong Kar-wai tricks up the schmaltz with a lot of avant-garde filigree. He's that most suspect of hybrids: a pop-schlock aesthete.

Worth a look-see for you artsy fartsy folks out there.

A brilliant move.

An elegantly paced, exquisitely restrained piece of storytelling. There is nothing so distinct as a Wong Kar Wai film.

In the Mood for Love is delicious eye-candy with rich layers of romantic longing and political tragedy.

Instead of asking us to identify with this couple, as an American film would, Wong asks us to empathize with them; that is a higher and more complex assignment, with greater rewards.

In the Mood for Love is not only one of the most visually attractive films of the year, it is one of the most romantic films.
