In the Tall Grass

Critics Consensus

A potentially intriguing premise is rapidly lost in the weeds during In the Tall Grass which struggles to stretch its slim source material to feature length.

  • Netflix seems to be banging out Steven King adaptations as fast as King used to bang out books. This one, based on a novella by King and his son Joe Hill, is quite a decent little creeper too.

  • "In the Tall Grass" runs too long and repeats itself too much to be as gripping as its source material. Turns out there's a limit to how scary weeds can be.

  • Despite an uneven track record, In the Tall Grass gives the lamest King adaptations a run for their money, as writer-director Vincenzo Natali labors to stretch out the story, which takes a wrong turn in more ways than one.

  • It's rather astonishing how fast Vincenzo Natali's "In the Tall Grass" completely loses your interest.

  • In the Tall Grass is a case of unchecked excess - more blood, more jump-scares, more mythology that goes not much of anywhere.

  • As it gets less relatable, it gets less interesting, but there's still Wilson's all-in performance and Natali's craftsmanship to keep us engaged, stuck in the grass, praying for a way out.

Director Vincenzo Natali does a fabulous job of visualizing this Stephen King and Joe Hill short story. His screen adaptation, though, isn't quite as good. Nonetheless, this is a worthwhile watch for genre lovers. The performances of all, especially Will Buie Jr. as a ten year old boy among those lost in a nightmarish labyrinth of tall grass, are excellent.

Patrick Wilson is just all-out balls-to-the-wall hamming it crazy, and I am Here. For. That. I say that quite genuinely. But Stephen King adaptations have had quite the resurgence (in a good way) over the past couple of years, and In the Tall Grass just really doesn't hit that bar we've been getting recently. In terms of quality, I mean.

Natali's visual style is the saving grace here I just wish he'd entrusted the screenplay to someone else.

As someone who grew up in the country running through grassy fields and corn mazes, this movie hits a particular fear and sensation of mine very accurately. It does capture the sensation of being lost in a field and losing your sense of direction very well, even with its supernatural edge added on to it. That's really the best part of it. I also liked how the characters are actual characters, with actually a pretty good amount of development and decent intelligence to them. The things I thought they should do, they do. Where the movie started to lose me a bit is near the third act where it just goes full Stephen King and gets a bit too weird. Don't get me wrong, I love weirdass Stephen King, and I was with it for a lot of the supernatural stuff in here, but at a certain point it kinda goes off the deep end and becomes a bit tough to swallow. Even so, I liked the movie. It was creepy, I didn't always know where it was going, and it tapped into a very real personal fear.
