What we are left with is a movie that carefully aims to be all-family entertainment, but you can't imagine any family member particularly wanting to watch it.

Humdrum direction fails to elevate an already bankrupt idea from its relentless doldrums.

Amazingly, the two versions have hit the casting bull's-eye twice in 24 years to provide superior entertainment.

One of the problems with The In-Laws is that it spends as much time with the uninteresting and unfunny wedding story as it does with the spy stuff.
May 24, 2003
This In-Laws isn't a disaster, it's just not very good.
May 23, 2003
Funny, if a bit broad.
May 23, 2003
Its laughs are sweet-natured, and Heaven knows the lead players earn every one.

If it's hot this weekend, and your air conditioner is broken, you could do worse. Otherwise, audience annulment proceedings will probably begin in a week or two.

If you've ever enjoyed watching Bergen, Brooks or Douglas, or ever been to a wedding you wish you'd missed, The In-Laws will make you laugh.
May 23, 2003
Douglas has rarely been more lighthearted or likable, and Brooks can only be described as effortlessly Brooksian. Unfortunately, the lameness of the humor, the ludicrous plot and the uninteresting characterizations don't make it nearly as much fun for us.
May 23, 2003
It's a pleasure to see Douglas in a rare movie where he doesn't have to grit his teeth in tension, just as it's always a pleasure to watch Brooks get mentally tortured.

Everything sly and low-key about The In-Laws, a 1979 comedy about a dentist and a rogue CIA agent with nothing in common except that the son of one is marrying the daughter of the other, is supersized and coarsened in Andrew Fleming's remake.
May 23, 2003
Formulaic and unnecessary.
May 23, 2003
The new In-Laws never captures the cheesy anarchy of the original, something worth shooting for if you remake a comedy classic. But at least it's funny enough that we can't call it a sacrilege.
May 23, 2003
Fresh and funny all over again.
May 23, 2003
A bland waste of time.
May 23, 2003
A flat-footed remake.
May 23, 2003
The In-Laws is successful on the level of light comic entertainment.

It's just another Hollywood comedy. There's nothing terribly wrong with that, but there's nothing terribly right with it either.
