Interstellar

Critics Consensus

Interstellar represents more of the thrilling, thought-provoking, and visually resplendent filmmaking moviegoers have come to expect from writer-director Christopher Nolan, even if its intellectual reach somewhat exceeds its grasp.

Audience Reviews for Interstellar

Even with enormously ambitious ideas and a nice grandiose score, this gorgeous but flawed science fiction movie suffers from heavy-handed, expository dialogue, plot holes and inconsistencies, mainly in the end, which is contrived and we can't make any heads or tails of it.

Visually stunning, and phenomenal performances. But fails to entertain me fully!

Christopher Nolan reaches for the stars in Interstellar, but ends up reaching past them. At a very lengthy 2 hours 45 minutes and a moderately slow pace, Interstellar isn't the easiest stroll through the park. While the scientific plot details require focus and attention, the mystery and interest factor behind it all is more than enough to keep this film from shredding itself to pieces and floating away in various directions, like it nearly does with its final act. The visuals are pleasing, but nothing new when it comes to space. At the same time, there isn't much to overcome the storytelling. Matthew McConaughey actually carries this film on his shoulders, but a good supporting cast of Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, and Jessica Chastain doesn't hurt. Interstellar is a science fiction trek to experience, if only once.

There's no denying the absolute beauty and spectacle on display throughout this almost 3 hour epic, but there's also something that many similar movies don't grasp and that's characters worth caring for. While the film sometimes exceeded my grasp of the scientific components because I am not well versed in that knowledge, I found Interstellar stimulating mentally and visually. The first half of the film where Nolan really dives into these characters, their pleas, and the Earth as a dying Dust Bowl really is some of his best work ever. The second half is not as strong and the plot seems to be reaching a little too far and goes preposterous at times, but it still had me on the edge of my seat throughout just waiting to see what happens next. If you love science fiction films, Nolan has crafted a stunning homage to the greats while still blazing a path for itself and a film that is certain to be talked about for quite some time.
