Into The Storm (2014)

Critic Consensus: Clumsily scripted and populated with forgettable characters, Into the Storm has little to offer beyond its admittedly thrilling special effects.

Most inexplicable, yet potent, are the shots that look down on the devastation from on high, implicitly reducing the entire cast to extras in a movie directed by God.

What we've got here is somewhere between Twister and one of those storm-chaser reality shows, except Jan de Bont made Twister.

When the badass cyclones muscle into town, ripping up schools, banks and airports, the film is fairly fun. Sadly, everything else about it is, well, a bit of a disaster.

The destruction and carnage is presented with verve and flair, making this a fine example of tornado porn.

A visually stunning disaster-thriller that ultimately feels cheap with its perverse take on death and gratitude.

Audience Reviews for Into The Storm

A cheesy disaster film, Into the Storm uses a found footage gimmick to try to create a visceral experience. And to some extent it succeeds, as the spectacle of the storm and its awesome destructive power transcends the screen. Some of the imagery is remarkably haunting, and a wonder to look at. But the story is garbage, and the characters are incredibly annoying. Additionally, the found footage conceit is completely ridiculous, making it hard to engage with the film. Yet as clumsy and amateurish as it is, Into the Storm delivers stunning visual effects that are riveting to watch.

A creature feature, strictly B movie stuff back in the day, though aided considerably by modern day tech which renders the monster's attacks pretty dramatically. The characters? Only introduced so that we can guess as to who will live or ...

So much potential, and taglines like 'Twister cranked up to 11!' had my attention, but this one plays a lot like a SyFy movie, but with much better CGI (and not much better acting quality). I really never felt invested in any of the characters, and there's barely a plot to speak of. Sure, there isn't much to a disaster movie, but even 'Twister' had a story and characters you cared about. 18 years its senior and it's still THE tornado movie you should be watching. Pass on this one until it hits Redbox!

Where have all the good disaster films gone? "Into The Storm" is the first film in a long time to attempt this formula, and while the first ten to twenty minutes of this film are utter garbage, the film slowly but surely becomes one hell of an intense action ride that you just have to admit you had fun with. The dialogue is very by-the-numbers and the characters are all very stereotypical, but this film somehow in it's final climax, made me care for everything that was happening to every character. From something that started out as lame and forgetful, became this story of redemption and many characters have great character arch's. The destruction and CGI of the tornadoes in this film are far more impressive than one would expect from this type of film and I admired that. "Into the Storm" will not be remembered for it's story, but as a film that got more and more entertaining as it went on. I've never had this big of a 180* turn happen to me in a while and it felt refreshing. Still, this is in no way a great film. I would watch all the action scenes over and over again, but nothing else really stands out. It is a mediocre film with awesome adrenaline fuelled action!
