Watching the Coens join forces with Hollywood producer Brian Grazer for this star-driven comedy is the equivalent of Justin Timberlake hooking up with Bob Dylan for an album of duets, but it works pretty darn well.

[T]here's a lot of problems with the script, and some of the stuff with Edward Herrmann I don't think works at all, it's not funny it just kind of falls flat. But Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones, I think they deliver enough to say it's worth seeing.

The Coens' most experimental film: a 'normal' movie...

...an uproariously quirky story about romance in the very unromantic field of matrimonial law.

Clooney shines, Zeta-Jones looks better than ever, the laughs are there, but the movie falls far short of perfection.

This film is like a Trojan horse; it pretends to be all cute and cuddly, but underneath that façade are some very large fangs.

The loversâ(TM) chemistry lends a welcome carnality to the film, balancing out the filmmakersâ(TM) more arch, quixotic tendencies.

Intolerable Cruelty is a shallow and instantly forgettable non-romantic comedy, a new cinematic low point for Joel and Ethan Coen.

This undistinguished film, lacking in wit, could not possibly be a Coen Brothers project, could it?

How it plays with audiences, your guess is as good as mine, but if this is what happens when Joel and Ethan Coen sell out, here's one vote for them to do it more often.

No different from most of the other dumb slapstick spoofs that pass for screwball comedy these days.
October 11, 2003
The Coens are setting themselves up again for the charge of misanthropy, but their cynicism here is so pure that, at least as embodied by Clooney and Zeta-Jones, it comes off as a kind of romantic ideal.
October 11, 2003
George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones square off deliciously, but this '30s-style battle of the sexes from the Coen brothers never catches fire.
October 11, 2003
One of the most inspired, scathing, and downright side-splitting comedies to come out of Hollywood this year.

Anyone who feels nostalgia for the classic age of screwball comedy will get a charge out of Intolerable Cruelty.

Substantially darker and more twisted than the average screwball romantic comedy.

Very slick and highly entertaining ... but it feels a bit off from the usual Coen fare.

By Coen standards this is a minor effort, but it's still superior to the average rom-com.

In its nasty, blackhearted take on contemporary coupling and uncoupling, Intolerable Cruelty has the distant though unmistakable ring of truth.
