While this film is not as dark or moody as the original series it’s still got that wonderfully weird charm. The way it reintroduces the audience to this world feels very natural even if the overall idea for this story seems a bit underdeveloped. The plot at times can seem a little directionless. The way it plays out as an elongated episode occasionally leaves space where the plot drags or pauses for a while to fill the scene with gags. However Invader Zim and its animation is so dang entertaining that this “drag” never feels boring. While the humor is not laugh-out-loud hilarious (like it can be in the series) it’s charming and most of it avoids cringe. The best part though is definitely its amazing characters, each one brimming with personality. As well as the expressionless pastel makeover they were given. Seriously, you can’t look away, the animation is eye candy! Bright, witty, and with fast paced action, this is what modern 2D should strive to be.
