I enjoyed the fight choreography and they pieced the plot together for a great flow between the martial arts sequences. It’s got the story, the subplots, a very likeable protagonist, the choreography, fight sequences, action is exquisitely done. There’s a level of poetry to the first ip man film. It’s made with passion and delicacy. Nothing feels wasted at all. For me it’s the moments of tragedy that get me. Amazing film. Everything you want in a martial arts film. A style that isn’t stylistic but intelligent. Fight scenes that carry weight and gravitas. Unbelievable camerawork, framing, editing, sound design. A thrilling second act and climax to boot. A beautiful score. Such a wonderful performance by Donnie Yen.
