The movie wears its social responsibility with pride, even if it doesn't always know how to put together a coherent public service announcement.

The movie -- as beautifully drawn, as sleek and engaging as it is -- has the annoyance of incredible smugness. It is, one could say, blinded by the hindsight.

I'll take Disney's superior animated entertainment, Tarzan, over this any day of the week.

Don't let your kids anywhere near this rubbish.

For most of its run time I found myself bored, searching for something-anything, nice music, some humor or even a touch of romance or action, to make the film interesting to watch.

Wisely, Bird and company eschew the standard Disney formula of catchy show tunes and cuddly animal sidekicks and lead Warner Bros. toward an animation style the studio can call its own.

Tender, moving and exciting for kids (and their secretly tearful parents).

Imagine E.T. as a towering metal man, and you have some of the appeal of The Iron Giant, an enchanting animated feature about a boy who makes friends with a robot from outer space.

The reason for The Iron Giant's success isn't hard to discern -- it has to do with the writing. The script is crisp, smartly-paced, intelligent, and emotionally satisfying. It recalls the strengths of E.T. without the weaknesses.

This movie provides a lot of good topics for discussion, including the role of violence and guns.

Lest all of this sound gravely symbolic, be assured that the film is, before anything else, deliciously funny and deeply affecting. And beautiful, oh so beautiful, as a work of coherent art.

This wonderful Warner Bros version of Ted Hughes's The Iron Man is a first-class achievement in cartoon virtuosity that liberally borrows images from 1950s comic-book art and science-fiction movies to stunning effect.

This is sharp, sophisticated stuff, appreciated on different levels by both parents and children, and even those who are neither. The film has impish humor, great adventure and more than a few thrills.

The film tackles remarkably unhappy moments, and it discusses mortality and morality in a responsible and emotionally affecting fashion.

Of course it flopped at the box office! It's a fantastic movie!

The Iron Giant isn't a Cold War allegory so much as an Americana fairy tale.

In every way, one of the highlights of both animation and family-friendly cinema in the last quarter-century.

This is enjoyable in part because of its flavorsome period ambience and its lively and satiric characters.

The Iron Giant has a great heart, and I loved its evocation of the days when good old Superman, as uncomplicated a superhero as ever existed, was the height of cool.
