Iron Man 2

Critics Consensus

It isn't quite the breath of fresh air that Iron Man was, but this sequel comes close with solid performances and an action-packed plot.

Finally getting around to watching this movie after years and years of hearing everyone complain that it is "the worst film in the MCU" or "it's not nearly as good as the first iron man". Though I do agree with the latter I don't agree that it's the worst film in the MCU. This movie expands on the story of Tony Stark in a great way, it takes a dive into his struggle with his arc reactor failing him as well as his body, and this movie is a great introduction for Black Widow with a perfect tease of what she can do and has done in future MCU films

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty wrong with Iron Man 2. But after re-watching for about the 3rd or 4th time, I couldn't help but enjoy the hell out of the film. It's nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. It's action packed, filled with timely humor, and great character development, even if it does have a pretty weak villain. In the next line of villains with the same abilities as the hero, Mickey Rourke stars as Ivan Vanko/Whiplash, a man with his mind set on vengeance for what the Starks did to his family. It's hard to ever get truly invested in Vanko as a character. Marvel really struggles with its villains, and Whiplash is another example of that. However, it may be more of a case in which Rourke simply didn't care about giving the character any depth at all. It's even more frustrating because Sam Rockwell is so good as Justin Hammer. He fit the witty humor of the Iron Man films impeccably, and doesn't take himself too seriously. If only the focus would have been on Hammer instead of Rourke. The Pepper and Tony relationship is better than ever in Iron Man 2 as Pepper is introduced as the new CEO of Stark Industries with Tony sidelined with other issues. I've said it before but I'll say it again, Pepper and Tony are one of the only superhero relationships that actually work, and it's once again handled extremely well in this sequel. Rhodey is back as the reluctant best friend to Tony, though this time, Don Cheadle suits up as War Machine. I didn't mind Terrence Howard's portrayal, but I think at this point, I couldn't see anyone fitting more nicely alongside Downey Jr. Their pairing make for some of the best action of the film. One of the film's few problems lies with the inclusion of so many different story lines, and a few shoehorned in characters. Scarlett Johansson makes a grand first impression as Black Widow, but she didn't really need to be there. However, her scenes alongside Jon Favreau are very memorable. Sure, there are quite a few unnecessary elements of the film's plot, but Iron Man 2 is still an enjoyable and highly re-watchable film. I can watch Downey Jr as Tony Stark any day. +Action +Cheadle is an upgrade +Rockwell +Pepper and Tony -Overcrowded plot -Whiplash is a throw away villain 7.8/10

Iron Man 2 for me was a fun movie, but is it better than the first movie? I'm gonna explain what I liked/disliked. Positives: 1. The characters; Robert Downey Jr. is once again perfect as Tony Stark. He captures the character so perfectly and again he is very likable. Gwyneth Paltrow is again great as Pepper Potts. Terrence Howard didn't reprise his role as Rhodey instead Don Cheadle has taken his place and honestly all the better for it, he is a lot better as the character in my opinion as I buy him as this Colonel a lot more than Terrence Howard. This film also introduces Scarlet Johanson as Black Widow who does a good job and Samuel L. Jackson who does as well. The rest of the cast is great too, such as Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko/Whiplash who is perfect as the character. The acting is also really good, there is no performance that sticks out like a sore thumb, Jon Favreau is great at directing actors and actresses' dialogue. They all feel natural. 2. The action; the action is a huge improvement over its predecessor. All the action is much more fun and investing especially my favourite scene (which arguably is the best action scene in the movie) which is the Black Widow hallway fight scene which is awesome to look at *wink* *wink*. Also the final fight scene is awesome too. Negatives: 1. The villain(s)/handling of the villain(s); like I said Mickey Rourke does a fantastic job as Ivan Vanko/Whiplash but unfortunately he is underutilized. His revenge for Tony is understandable but he isn't very memorable as a villain or compelling enough. Apparently Justin Hammer is the main villain but at times I have a hard time seeing who is the main one. Which brings me to another problem. 2. The structure; this film's plot is inconsistent and there are moments that make no sense. There is a lot of subplots and this film does have a hard time meshing them together. In the first movie the subplots which were consistent blended well with its main plot and didn't conflict. Here this movie seems to jampack quite a lot of subplots and its hard to focus on them half the time with the main plot. And to top it all off they don't resolve majority of the subplots, so they have no value pretty much. Some moments make no sense, such as Ivan getting rammed 4 times by a car and not having much of a scratch on him or severly injured for that matter. Technically he doesn't have any superpowers so it makes no sense how he's able to sustain that much damage. Also after the battle at the race track he says "you lose" even though he lost the battle..... he says it again after the final battle too. I think he mistook win for lose... um yeah... another thing is that Agent Coulson says that he has to prevent Tony from leaving his house, but moments and moments later Tony is seen driving away from his house in his Audi R8 perfectly fine.... ummm either he found a secret exit or Agent Coulson is bad at his job... 3. This film is more of a set up for the Avengers rather than holding its own as a film. This film doesn't really solve any of the subplots, they are all just there... in the end it just doesn't lead anywhere or amount to much. Overall: Iron Man 2 for me is a decent flick, would I say its great? No way, but its not an awful film its just messy. I still enjoyed Iron Man 2, it was a lot of fun and the action is great as well as Tony Stark still being a likable asshole. Iron Man 2 is definitely not as good as the first movie but it still has its moments.
