What saves the flick is Paul Giamatti's John, played as a petulant, damaged man born in a world where he wields the power of a god and inevitably rages as that power is snatched away.

Good gravy, if you're looking for satisfyingly bloody swordplay, look no further.

Like Takashii Miike's 13 Assassins, Ironclad takes a familiar genre-the historical action picture-and colors it blood-red.

This English sword-battle drama is a mess. But there's a violent simplicity and a lack of pretentiousness that's refreshing.

Casting is almost uniformly first rate with Cox, Purefoy and the always brilliant Giamatti providing noteworthy standouts.

As a critic who complains about painless and brainless action movies, I hoist a glass of mead to the men and maidens of "Ironclad."

A gore-filled guilty pleasure...

A certain bloody matinee charm to it, if your idea of charm is brutally graphic combat scenes and well-known faces hamming it up in the downtime between.

Through it all, Paul Giamatti spits bilious fury as a ruthless king with a mile-wide mean streak and an army of Danish mercenaries. What's not to like?

Purefoy is as bleakly gorgeous as the film around him... With scads of bloody action and a boot in the ass to the notion of the divine right of kings, this is flick to hit you both in the gut and in the head.

It's overlong, but Ironclad provides a righteous jolt, working as a gritty work of period recreation and as a sword-swinging marathon of squirting blood and flying severed limbs.

Character study, history lesson, and bloody war story, "Ironclad" adds up to more than the sum of its violent parts if only just barely.

English has imbued proceedings with a gratifying brutality; a grubby, washed out, theatre of nastiness...

It's a persuasive portrayal of a violent era and its harsh privations.

The characters and dialogue lack the vibrancy of the action but, all in all, this is much more enjoyable than Ridley Scott's po-faced Robin Hood.

A topical history lesson in the form of a horror comic.

He sure isn't the obvious choice to play King John, but US-born Sideways star Paul Giamatti pulls it off in this bleak and bloody drama examining the terrible vengeance he visited on his enemies post-Magna Carta.

For those who've always found Robin Hood yarns a trifle lightweight, this rufty-tufty beer-swilling, limb-lopping examination of King John attempting to quash a rebellion after being forced to sign the Magna Carta is worth a look.

Captures the contemporary imagination: freedom for every man ... we empathise with its characters' determination to defend this ideal ... we easily commit to the grounds for the barbarity.

The walls are awash with mashed heads, gouting wounds, split torsos and burnt flesh. It's like being put in the stocks and pelted with raw offal.
