A messy movie about the messiness that family life often involves.

Endearing moments battle with forced melodrama to produce a muddled family portrait both tiresome and tender.

The movie deals with these touchy subjects, and others, but in a plot so jammed with events, disputes, tragedies and revelations that the most serious matters don't seem to receive enough attention.

Not even Hello! magazine is going to want to take unauthorized snaps of this particular Douglas family event.

You keep hoping for this movie to be better than it is. But it never is.

Five years from now this will be remembered as the most expensive home movie ever made by a family. The DVD will look great on the Douglas family shelf - but God knows it won't be on anybody else's.

. . . few audience members will find something in the mélange of clichéd and clever ideas that doesn't personally resonate at some level. It Runs In the Family knows the words, but not the music. . .

They must have made an intimidating pair because all during production no one had the courage to tell them that It Runs in the Family stinks.

It's too bad that the talented Douglases had to make this syrupy saga an artistic family affair to remember-or in this case one to quickly forget.

'I never want to see you again' ranks amongst the top three lines that perfectly describe Jesse Wigutow's screenplay. The other two being 'Could you possibly be more unappealing?' and 'You didn't exactly set the bar all that high.'

While this dysfunctional family drama has an interesting casting gimmick, it's sadly sentimental and ultimately frustrating. "Growing up isn't easy at any age" but this never approaches "On Golden Pond."

When the same surname keeps appearing during the opening credits, it's usually a bad sign.

'Tiene el grave defecto de un guión mal estructurado, que desaprovecha el talento de los protagonistas con diálogos poco creíbles y algunas situaciones forzadas'

For what passes as a story, it's bickering and sniping, followed by outright hostility.
