All the punk energy in the world can't distract from the second-rate Sundance-ness.

The writer-director, Christian Papierniak, made his name with the video game NBA 2K18. He appears to be trying to split the difference between that arena and the world of "edgy" indie female-driven comedy.

A pretty, slightly precious punk trifle with blood on its white tux jacket.

Despite a committed performance from lead actress Mackenzie Davis and a promising opening, the film quickly corkscrews into a death spiral of trite dialogue meant to obfuscate the lack of a coherent or meaningful narrative.

energetic, jam-packed with talent and has a likable indie throwback feel with some memorable moments. But in an ultimately frustrating ending, we question if she even grew at all, and if not, why we spent the time with her at all.

Watching Izzy's frenzied pratfalls often feels like watching a documentary of Ms. Davis - always great - running a hamster wheel that powers uninspired comic material.

It's uneven practically by design, with a tone that slides all the way from kooky farce to anguished psychological study, just about held together by Mackenzie Davis's lively, spiky turn in the lead.

There's a very good probability that the story of how first-time writer-director Christian Papierniak finagled the (rather impressive) cast for his feature debut is vastly more interesting than the (rather unimpressive) film itself.

The film is about being overwhelmed by Los Angeles, its sprawling indifference, but also about finding your place in it - and even, at times, its welcoming warmth.

"Given the vintage alt-culture vibe, you'd swear this blast of Hot Topic Cinema had been spat out of a time machine."

[A] dizzying mashup of frenetic visual styles and clashing narrative techniques.
