Movie Info

Though legendary entertainer Al Jolson was a highly-visible presence on the USO circuit during WWII, he was generally regarded as a relic of an earlier time. An attractively-appointed fabrication, this film distorts and glosses over the particulars of Jolson's life, but the results are very entertaining.

Critic Reviews for The Jolson Story

All Critics (4)

A vastly entertaining, but cliche ridden and fictionalized biopic of the legendary performer

It has the music alright, but the dramatics are corny, tiresome and not reliable.

Strange biography with some rousing music numbers.

Not a lot of relation to the truth, but with all those Jolson songs on the soundtrack it hardly matters.

Audience Reviews for The Jolson Story

One of the best musical biographies ever made; colorful & entertaining, and filled with those wonderful Jolson melodies (dubbed for actor Larry Parks by Jolson himself). This immensely popular film even generated a hit song in 1946: "The Anniversary Song."

Not a bad film but not a great one either. This one was going along oh so well until..whoa whoa whoa whoa..we see Jolson in blackface. Talk about insensitivity coming out of nowhere.
