Movie Info

Five prisoners of war escape captivity in a Confederate prison camp only to land in an uncharted Pacific island where time stands still and dastardly pirates don't take kindly to strangers in director Russell Mulcahy's screen adaptation of fantasy author Jules Verne's literary classic. They thought they were on their way to freedom when they leapt into a balloon and took to the skies, but upon landing on an island where nothing is as it seems, these escapees are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. From bloodthirsty beasts to murderous pirates and a mad genius named Captain Nemo, treachery lurks behind every corner on this island, and if these five survivors have any hope of staying alive, they'll have to fight to their dying breaths to escape the island and get back to the modern world.

Audience Reviews for Jules Verne's Mysterious Island

Too long, shoddy effects, and dull characters. The Pirates are cheesy, the monsters are scarce, and Stewart stays absent for too long. Typical ending and bland action. The film doesn't offer much in its 3 hour run time.

Starting off rather piss-poorly with the hijacking of the balloon, and some of the worst blue screen effects, maybe ever, once they crash onto the island, things do pick up a lot. Kyle MacLachlan does a decent job, but he's done better. Gabrielle Anwar does well enough as the love interest, but, like a lot of the other supporting cast, it is a thankless role. Patrick Stewart as Captain Nemo; let that sink in real quick. Stewart is freaking psychopath Nemo! He's awesome here. Russell Mulcahy, the reason i sought this out, does a bland, uninspired job throughout, bringing very little fun or energy to the proceedings, which is sad considering my enjoyment of his two newer flicks. The introduction of the pirates does help things remain interested, and the script is pretty solid.

Great acting once again by Patrick Stewart and I'll watch anything written by Jules Verne, didn't really care much for the special effects in this movie though, but none the less it was enjoyable.
