Critic Reviews for Jusqu'au bout du monde
Before, one left the theater befuddled; one now leaves the theater equally befuddled but also moved, even genuinely disturbed.
What appears to be a cosmopolitan picaresque moves from moment to moment to momentousness,.. Wenders' dream is only just now released in an integral, near-5-hour walkabout... A great and poetic and caring film has arrived at last.
Watching it now, even with its dull patches, it seems like a miracle.
Much of Wenders' sprawling saga is absurd, and some of it pretentious, yet set in 199, this film, like all of his previous work, raises interesting questions about the role of modern technology and its impact on identity and interpersonal communication.
Thought-provoking romp by German film director Wim Wenders, a global hopping cinematic philisopher.
Contains a few spectacular moments, but feels misguided overall.
Audience Reviews for Jusqu'au bout du monde
Lots of great ideas and a fantastic use of music. Sadly, I was bored after the first hour and none of the ideas ever fully manifested into anything that warranted the 4 plus hour duration.
Normally I prefer a 'director's cut' of a film but this time I'll take the edited down version gladly. Four and a half hours is just too damn long for a road trip drama even if some of the ideas in it are akin to great films like Brainstorm. So 4 stars for the two and a half hour version and barely 3 for the 'test of endurance' version.
This movie is deep in a subtle way, Winders pulls a rabbit out of his hat again with his brilliant filming and a fresh story of 5 unlikely characters following Sam Farber’s (William Hurt) obsession to give the gift of images of his family to his blind mother (Jeanne Moreau – Nikita), as well as to finally prove his worth to his father (Max Von Sydow-everything). While avoiding a bounty hunter in Paris, Sam meets Claire (Solveig Dommartin-Wings of Desire) a character that is hard not to fall in love with as her four charmed followers display, one of which is her ex-boyfriend (Sam Neill – Jurassic Park) who wants to discredit Sam so he can win her back; this chance meeting leads to a delightful romantic cat and mouse game across the globe with Claire chasing Sam. Finally reaching the Australian desert they will all discover if their effort, work, intentions, and illusions were with it, as a falling nuclear satellite is shot out of orbit by a US missile. The soundtrack is wonderfully inserted into each chapter of the story featuring artist like Peter Gabriel, R.E.M., U2, Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, and more. Do to American audiences desire for shorter films the US release version is 2 hours shorter than the Director’s/German release, both are wonderful films but if you like longer films its definitely worth the time if you can find it. Run times: US -158m, EU – 179m, DC or GRM/ITL – 280m
