It becomes a bit of a drag as it wears on, but in its best moments it is a joy to behold. Each shot is perfectly framed, and the aesthetic of the film is very much reminiscent of golden age Hollywood.

Bleak, dark yet a statement of the world we live in. A reminder no on is immortal; yet the world will put you on a pedestal as one and later break it down. A howler for me... the unsaid expressions between Shanti and Sinha are love understood, suppressed and eternal. Sniff

Slightly better than Pyaasa. Most of the songs are filler, but there's a couple of pretty good ones. Dutt's ego is showing again, and the self-pity is laid on incredibly thick. There's some really masterful stuff going on with camera movement and lighting. It's just a shame it isn't more consistent. The moments of brilliance are superb, but ultimately they're overshadowed by the rest of it, which is mostly dull, corny and/or predictable. And the comedy is very broad and stupid.

waheeda at her best.

This movie clearly shows how unpredictable life is. Guru Dutt must be given credit for trying to do something which is beyond formula. Very few people have the courage to show the failure of the hero. Compare to these days love stories, where hero and heroine marry in the end regardless what happens to them, Kaagaz ke phool is an exception.
No doubt, Guru Dutt is a legend who went ahead of his time.

Superb yet painful experience, under the gifted hands of Dutt. It maybe dated now, yet is still a classic film of the late 50's.

Guru Dutt's melancholy classic foreshadowing his own sad death. Awesome black and white cinematography and music.
