A meek little diversion, nothing more.

It might work as a parody of this genre if it weren't played just like another formulaic retread.

Mary Poppins commits murder most foul in this slight but worthwhile comedy that proudly displays its droll British humor at every turn.

There are enjoyable nuggets throughout Mum, but they're sporadic, and in the end the movie is no keeper.

The fine line between eccentricity and outright dopiness is skirted with British aplomb in Keeping Mum, a comedy that revives the ghoulish tradition of the Ealing Studios' heyday, with Maggie Smith standing in for Alec Guinness in, say, The Ladykillers.

It's nothing more than a tolerably amiable diversion.

There's only so much even the best actors can do with a sloppy script, and Keeping Mum can't get over its lack of focus.

A modest comedy that wants to be both dark and reassuring at the same time.

Bracket out the ethical concerns of making merry as the body count mysteriously rises and Keeping Mum is an endearing hoot.

It's probably one of the funniest films to come out of England in years.

Maggie Smith is like Mary Poppins...with a meat ax. Serial Grandmom strikes again.

Slickness can turn anything into formula - even eccentricity, in the case of the handsome and entirely unfunny British farce Keeping Mum.

Maggie Smith can accomplish more in two seconds than most actors can in two hours.

Its downfall in the end is that the film offers more quirkiness than charm, but that quirkiness does have its appeal.

Smith is an absolute delight, exuding grandmotherly warmth even as she's picking her next target.

Keeping Mum isn't a great film, but it's a right pleasant one, sometimes downright funny.
