A meticulous factual drama, with input from Jerome's family and a beautiful, utterly believable, portrayal of Jerome by newcomer Chance Perdomo - it becomes something else: a heart-rending personal family tragedy about a young life wasted.
It turned out to be the best and bleakest dramatic portrait of modern Britain I've seen in years.
Tahsin Guner's meticulous script lingered on agonising what-if turning points when tragedy might have been prevented.
Killed By My Debt is moving, depressing, very current and sensitively portrayed with a great performance from Chance Perdomo as Jerome at the forefront.
Killed By My Debt is an overwhelmingly bleak yet poignant film that vitally humanises a story which is so often told in statistics.
It's not often you can say that five stars aren't enough to do justice to a TV drama, but Killed By My Debt presents one of those occasions.
Chance Perdomo is powerfully empathetic as the panicking Jerome... only a traffic warden with a heart of stone could remain unmoved.
