Would've best been presented as a Netflix series of sorts instead of the overly stuffed, uneven science-fiction-come-road-drama it ultimately plays out as

Despite the calibre of some of the performances, and however fresh and novel some of the cinematography and pacing, it's difficult to recommend Kin because of its central premise.

Neither the kid nor the laser gun ends up being all that important (or necessary).

It's a little bit Terminator, a little bit coming of age, so very promising, and unfortunately a lot of disappointment.

Advertised as an adolescent SciFi adventure where a 'tween finds an intergalactic gun and all his problems are solved, the film is much more than that. And also much less.

Because of this having so many poorly-written and unlikable characters that cramp the screen, the story and the emotions get muddled and leave you feeling empty.

The ending... stop trying to play me for a sequel that you are never gonna have, that nobody's interested in.

The smartest character in this movie is that gun.

Until it reaches that bewildering ending, Kin is mostly just a snooze fest. It drags along, finding the energy to come to life only intermittently.

Josh and Jonathan Baker's feature length expansion on their acclaimed sci-fi short is big on SFX, but lacks in almost every other department.

Even for the realm of YA sci-fi, the boy-befriends-a-gun storyline of Kin is pretty messed up.
September 21, 2018
The sci-fi film Kin has a potentially interesting central relationship between two brothers, but how it positions a gun as something that gives a boy confidence is less than ideal.

For a film built around an enormous space gun, Kin boasts precious little action.

All these positives aren't enough to make this movie good, since it's let down by an incredibly dated story full of some of the most tired clichés, without even attempting to add something new or fresh to spice things up.

The first part of Kin seems to be an indie drama with sci-fi beats, but it keeps its best cards for the final cliffhanger. [Full Review in Spanish]

If the Baker boys truly were fabulous, they'd have had the guts to go all the way and earn an R rating.
