Audience Reviews for Kisses (Kuchizuke)

Somewhat reminiscent of the ever-popular "Say Anything...," director Yasuzo Masumura's debut is a sweet romance set against a backdrop of parental imprisonment. Kinichi and Akiko both have fathers convicted of white-collar crime and meet during visiting hours at the prison. A whirlwind romance follows (the race track, the beach, the restaurants...), but issues of finding money for bail intrude. Meanwhile, Akiko's mother recuperates in a tuberculosis clinic while Kinichi's estranged mother is a shady, self-centered jewelry dealer. The young couple's chemistry is a delight, while Hitomi Nozoe is an irresistible beauty as Akiko. At just 74 minutes, the film's length seems just right for its slight story. A charming piece of work.
