Movie Info

A woman must choose between old and new love in this drama from Japan. Kyoko (Ebise Hana) is a pretty young woman who works in a college library while helping out at her family's dry cleaning shop in her spare time. Kyoko still lives in the same Kyoto neighborhood where she grew up, and for some time she's been dating Kota (USA [EXILE]), who works with his dad making tofu when he's not pursuing a career as a comedian. One day, Kyoko meets a handsome academic (Sotaro Tanaka) who often uses her library for research; he's clearly infatuated with her and sets out to court her. Kyoto is torn between her feelings for Kota and the professor, and this situation become more complicated when the academic asks her to join him as he goes to China for a long-term research project. While Kyoto is attracted to her new man, can she leave behind the people and the neighborhood that's so much a part of her? Kyoto Uzumasa Monogatari (aka Kyoto Story) was directed in tandem by young filmmaker Abe Tsutomu and his mentor Yamada Yoji; it was intended to be the first in a series of films in which experienced directors help new artists bring their work to the screen. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
