I saw this film a few months ago and it still comes into my mind...its one of those films that at first when you see it, you think it was very good but as time goes by...you realize that it wasn't just good-it was a memorable, compelling film that resonated deep with you.

"The Girl by the Lake" is a movie I saw at the Italian Film Festival in Brisbane... it was my choice because of the director's pedigree: ten times winner of DAVID DI DONATELLO, 3 times winner of NASTRI D'ARGENTO and two times winner of the Venice film festival!

After watching this movie I had to ask myself how did he got all these awards?! Not at one moment was this movie better than the worst episode of "Inspector Rex" on SBS TV...

Unusual murder is to be solved by an inspector who is a main character in a movie which does not have any lead in it... the audience is not sure if the story is about the murder, the inspector, the girl, the killer, the young lady... it was the late show but that was not the reason for a loud snoring in the cinema! Andrea Molaioli owes all of us as a director - wasted night which could be used better.

It might have been me (with my constant falling asleep during this film; that can't help!) but I just couldn't get into this film. Pretty slow moving with a lot of screen time where the inspector is just looking off into space it seemed to me (or was I asleep?) He wasn't a bad actor at all. But they could have made it an 80 minute movie with no problem. I didn't like the music either. It was rather obtrusive. I just hope my next week of movies are better than this past week!

Take a Scandinavian book, relocate it to Northern Italy, substitute flash-backs with words, copy a couple of scenes from other movies, put it on screen with the most elementary filmic solutions, and call it the Renaissance of Italian Cinema.

Compelling murder drama that crosses into maudlin territory too many times.

A lame crime mystery to describe it. Say no more.

A good movie, maybe not great but definitely a good one...
The cinematography is wonderful capturing all these fantastic landscapes and settings, good acting and a little mystery to be solved...
A beautiful girl is found dead by the lake side, and investigation has got many confusing leads, but by the end the truth is revealed although a little unexpected one, maybe ...

Solid cinematography & good acting. It was pretty predictable but overall an ok film.

I thought the story got boring after 1 hr. Didn't get any better from that point.

A film with excellent picture and lyric music. On one hand the slow development of the plot "catches" the rhythm of life of the town but on the other hand could probably be the weak point of the film.

Italian Dolomites; pace of film is like my Triumph Dolomite; evenly paced and with many false starts. Anna, found naked by the lake with her clothes neatly folded and no signs of struggle; but clearly murdered. Suspects fall over themselves and Inspector Sanzio (Toni Servillo) with his dead pan sleuthiness juggles through to a confusing ending. just to spoil the ending the person who did it was...

Look at the poster. It's beautiful. Now imagine 1 and a half hours of a similarly beautiful film. The cinematography captures such wonderful landscapes and settings, with perfect lighting, that it's easy to forget there is a story to tell. The story itself is an intricately woven masterpiece, that seems familiar but feels different. This is probably due to Molaioli capturing the slow, quiet nature of his small town setting. The twist here, is at the beginning of the film, and it's a good one. Servillo is one of the finest actors today. He is almost as good here as he was in Consequences of Love. His police commissioner trying to deal with the case and his wife, whom has Alzheimer's. The majority is in daylight, making it stand out and take real advantage of the fantastic greens in the area. The soundtrack is also simple but heart shattering. The simple notes creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

Inferiore alle alte aspettative, soprattutto mi aspettavo qualcosa di più eclatante come fine. Peccato perché fotografia e musica sono di qualità superiore alla media italiana.

If u like foreign film (sub-titles) and mysteries... this is a decent one.

Interesting, but long and a little confusing. Though designed as a murder- mystery, some of the setups that went nowhere were definitely in need of tying up. The landscape shots were also beautiful, but didn't go well with the theme of the film.

Just like a German "Tatort" - only in Italy.
