To say that the film left me cold isn't a criticism, as that's clearly the intent. And Florence Pugh, who was only 20 when the film was shot, holds your attention as firmly as all the great women of film noir were able to.

[Florence] Pugh is mesmerizing.

The brazenness of her actions and opacity of her emotions suggest a tragic heroine in the grand tradition ... but the film lacks the propulsive drive to make her fate moving.

Pugh is a wrecking crew, communicating pure malevolence with a simple glance, but always keeping her composure. She may be evil, but she's first and foremost a lady.

Lady Macbeth feels like gussied-up exploitation incapable of wringing any actual substance out of its lurid trappings.

A Victorian chamber piece with a dubious morality and cautionary feminist designs.

An extraordinary film with a compelling performance from Florence Pugh as the ruthless Katherine, too young and too impulsive as she realises her power. There is humour, too, often animal-related. How do you actually bury a dead horse?
November 3, 2018
The film is all style and no substance. Many of the frames seem to exist solely for their aesthetic purpose, and the sexual and racial politics appear ever so juvenile.
October 31, 2018
Lady Macbeth is symphony of horrible situations building to an unbelievable crescendo in one of the most intense movies of the year.

The Brontës meet Gillian Flynn in Lady Macbeth, a tasty period noir that slithers with menace at each turn.

Even when the viewers' sympathies are, hopefully, long gone, Katherine still has the utmost sympathy for herself, and it gives the film a psychological depth beyond the shock value of her actions.
