A light-hearted monster movie that offers up plenty of laughs, Lake Placid is still a really fun and well-made creature feature that doesn't ever treat its characters- or the audience- like morons.

'I'm rooting for the crocodile,' announces Betty White. The line is funny and revealing: The film is smart enough to admit the monsters are usually the most interesting characters in these movies, but it's also smart enough to make the people interesting.

Well worth the watch if only for its attempts to inject levity in what's just a simple nature run amok horror comedy.

An old-hat but somehow still fresh horror-comedy that wins its audience over by the personalities onscreen.

Surprise to say, the film is actually, by turns, both scary and funny, although seldom at the same time.

Steve Miner directs this shaggy-dog movie that wonderfully reveals the strange and the wondrous in all of God's creations.

An odd, derivative, but sporadically likeable film.

...even though everything in sight defines cinematic repulsion, that doesn't mean you still can't have a good time.

Briskly paced and snappily written, it's the only movie currently in theaters that is completely free of pretensions.

Best of all it's got Pullman, Fonda, Platt, and Gleeson and it's very, very funny.

Instead of wearing out its welcome with a dozen false endings like so many thrillers do, 'Lake Placid' simply shakes you up, lets you go and leaves you laughing.

Lake Placid is worth paying full admission price alone just to see Golden Girl sweetie Betty White feed a blind-folded cow to the croc and cuss out the feds.
