Stay away unless you enjoy gross- out violence, and stay even farther away if you're an animal lover, since some of the most grisly attacks are aimed at cows who just want to chew their cuds in peace.

The lazy finale makes Lake Placid seem more marginal and forgettable than it already was, which is actually something of a feat.

Miner's thoroughly unimaginative visual style sees to it that "Lake Placid" is not the least bit frightening, and the entire undertaking generates maybe one decent laugh. That is, if you don't count Fonda's chronic inability to act.

You either find the nasty-minded writing amusing or you don't, and there's nothing left for the film to draw on if you don't.

It's neither Jaws-scary nor Tremors-funny, but genre-movie fans in 1999 did have a chance to feast on the year's talkiest, most neurotic horror movie. They respectfully declined.

While portions of the film do work pretty well, you can't help but wonder how much of an improvement a little variation would have had on the entire project.

Where "Godzilla" makes the head hurt, "Placid" splashes up a bit fun. A solid "B" movie.
